SEPANG: The CID is confident of eradicating illegal gambling operations within a week, a timeline set by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh assured this following a four-day blitz of raids.

“We have ramped up our efforts,” he told reporters at the KL International Airport yesterday.

He said in the four days beginning Sunday, police raided 3,665 premises, arrested 364 people and seized 3,015 gambling machines.

“If you compare the number of raids and arrests between January and September last year to the same period, there has been a significant increase,” he said.

A total of 65,361 raids with 26,121 arrests took place this year compared to 57,399 and 19,079 arrests during the same period last year.

This was an increase of 11.1% from the same period last year.

Comm Mohmad said the number of those brought to court for illegal gambling had also increased this year.

“Last year, we charged 2,534 out of 5,860 cases while 2,945 cases are in the process of being charged.

“This year, out of 6,817 cases, we have charged 1,719 and 4,440 are still in the process of being charged.”

Comm Mohmad warned that police will not compromise on any crime including illegal gambling.

On Wednesday, Khalid said the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers are working to compile a law to combat illegal online gambling.

He added this was because currently there was no law to charge those who are involved in cyber-gambling activities.
