Duo jailed, fined for graft

MIRI: A 44-year-old worker with a shipping company was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court yesterday for offering RM500 bribe to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) enforcement officer seven months ago.

Laseh Sling, who was among 12 individuals detained under Op Tukul, was also sentenced to a day’s jail and ordered to undergo two years’ jail if he did not settle the fine.

He pleaded guilty to committing the offence on a tugboat in the waters of Limbang (latitude 04 50 898N and longitude 115 03 074E) near here at 4.30pm on March 14.

Earlier, in the same court, a subcontractor for a logging company, Teng Yok Foo, 42, pleaded guilty to offering RM2,000 to Mohamad Dzakariya Abdul Kader, who is attached with the Batu Kawa General Operation Force’s intelligence division on Sept 10.

The offence was committed at a seafood restaurant at the Miri Waterfront Centre here about 9pm.

The money was an inducement for Dzakariya to not take action against Teng for felling timber without a valid permit at Long Kesseh in Baram here.

Judge Nixon Kennedy Kembong sentenced Teng to a day’s jail and RM10,000 fine or two years’ jail.

MACC prosecuting officer Katherine Nais prosecuted while the two accused were not represented.
