Ex-chief of TNB dies

SHAH ALAM: FORMER Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) executive chairman Tan Sri Ani Arope died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 82.

He was undergoing treatment at Ramsay Sime Darby Medical Centre in Subang Jaya when he died before dawn.

Ani’s remains were brought to the TNB Islamic Centre in Bangsar to enable family, friends and former colleagues to pay their last respects. Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail attended the ceremony in Bangsar.

Ani’s youngest son, Ismail Ani, 42, said his father had concealed the illness from family members, who only found out about the cancer in 2010, when it was at stage four.

“Since then, we spent more time together, and our best memory was performing the umrah as a family in 2011.”

Born on May 17, 1932, in Sungai Bakap, Seberang Prai in Penang, Ani is survived by his wife, Puan Sri Saenah Ahmad, three biological children and several adopted children.

His remains were laid to rest at the Shah Alam Muslim Cemetery yesterday afternoon, with some 100 family members and friends present. Among those present were TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd, and TNB human resource vice-president Datuk Muhammad Razif Abdul Rahman.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, via Twitter, expressed sorrow over Ani’s death.

“Condolences to the family of Tan Sri Ani Arope over his passing this (yesterday) morning. May he be placed among the company of the righteous in the hereafter. Al-Fatihah.”

Ani served TNB from 1990 to 1996 and was involved in the making of a number of key decisions in the nation’s largest power company. Before joining TNB, he was Bank Simpanan Nasional chairman and Kumpulan Guthrie Bhd group chief executive.

From 1969 to 1972, Ani, who was dubbed the “Renaissance Man”, was Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia director.

The highly renowned corporate figure also worked in various multinational and private companies.
