Malaysia and Thailand to share intelligence

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand have agreed on intelligence sharing between the two countries to ensure regional peace and stability, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The Defence Minister, who had a meeting with Thailand’s Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha in Bangkok yesterday, said they also spoke about the threat posed by Islamic State (IS) in the region.

Hishammuddin and Prayut discussed ways to work together to solve security-related problems, including terrorism, human-trafficking and tensions in southern Thailand.

“We share the common view that despite widespread opportunities for our region, numerous challenges also exist. We agreed to continually look forward, planning for future issues that would challenge and shape our region.

“We agreed that trust, communication and management of differences were a common responsibility,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The fruitful discussion also touched on topics such as defence cooperation, national disaster preparedness and management, as well as certain security risks.

Hishammuddin said both sides agreed that a strong, successful and united Asean was not only an economic necessity but also a strategic imperative.
