Govt may set up dedicated disaster management agency: Muhyiddin

PUTRAJAYA: The government may considered a dedicated agency to manage natural disasters in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the time has come for changes to be instituted to prepare the national to face large-scale natural disasters such as the recent floods.

He said however thorough studies have to be carried out before a decision can be made on the matter.

Studies would also include reassessing the National Security Council’s present scopes.

He was speaking to reporters after chairing the post-flood action plan meeting today.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin who is also the Education Minister, also said that the ministry may consider introducing co-curriculum activities to raise awareness on the danger of extremism among students.

it would also include activities to get the students to appreciate peace.

These activities, however, would not be added into the school syllabus.

“It would not be practical and not easy for the ministry. There are limited time (or) contact hours in school (for it to be added as a subject on its own),” he said.
