Ex-Malaysian Bar president Christopher Leong will be summoned, IGP tweets

PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysian Bar president Christopher Leong (pic) will be summoned by the police for his allegedly “seditious and misleading” statement, believed to be related to his remark on the judiciary.

In a tweet posted late Friday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said a police report has been lodged against the lawyer.

“@PDRMasia sahkan terima lapuran re-statement yg berunsur menghasut dan mengelirukan Rakyat oleh Christopher Leong. Kita akan panggil CL.”

(“PDRMasia have confirmed that they have received a report on seditious and misleading statement by Christopher Leong. We will summon CL”.)

Leong, whose term as the Bar president ended recently, had come under fire from some quarters for saying that Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was “persecuted” by the Federal Court.

There were also attempts by a group of lawyers, dubbed G100, to make him retract his statement and apologise in a motion moved during the Bar’s 69th annual general meeting, only to be shot down by the majority.

The police action against Leong is believed to have been triggered by a statement made by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri, who told Parliament on Thursday that the authorities could not take action against him as there were no police reports.
