Police to probe Sarawak Report’s founder: IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The police will be investigating Clare Rewcastle-Brown, the founder of online portal Sarawak Report, over the publication of its latest article.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the claims made in the article were defamatory, and may have broken several laws including Section 124 of the Penal Code on undermining parliamentary democracy.

“We have received many reports about this article and will investigate accordingly,” he told reporters here. The Sarawak Report had claimed that it was in possession of “charge sheets” purportedly drafted by former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, calling for the arrest of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The allegations have been denied by Abdul Gani’s replacement, Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, as well as other officials from the A-G’s Chambers.

Khalid, however, declined to elaborate on how any action will be taken against Rewcastle-Brown, given that she was a British national based in the United Kingdom. “We have our ways,” he told reporters here.

He also said the police will not be calling up Abdul Gani to assist in the investigation. “The claims have already been officially denied by the A-G, so why do we need to ask the former A-G? In my opinion, there is no need.”
