DBKL programmes to ensure ‘hawker free streets’ by 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will carry out several programmes in stages to ensure that the city’s streets are hawker-free by 2020.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said DBKL was conducting a census to determine the exact number of hawkers plying their trade outside buildings or at the roadsides, and 7,807 people had been surveyed, so far.

“The programmes including relocating the hawkers to new hawker centres, upgrading hawker operating areas and encouraging hawkers to use a van or truck to carry out their business,” he said.

He told reporters this after handing over contributions to five hawkers and petty traders associations here today.

City Hall has also allocated RM500,000 to 50 street vendors to acquire and use trucks for their business modus operandi.

At the event, the Federal Territory (FT) Malay Hawkers and Petty Traders Association, and FT Bumiputera Traders’ Association received RM50,000 each, while the FT Bumiputera Hawkers and Traders Association received RM30,000.

The Indian Petty Traders Association and Chinese Traders Association also received a contribution of RM20,000 each.
