Malaysia wants to probe notorious duo over Sabah kidnappings

KUALA LUMPUR: Police here want the Philippine authorities to hand over two men, including a key member of the notorious Muktadir brothers gang, for investigations into cross-border kidnappings in Sabah.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) said the Philippines had been notified of Malaysia’s interest after the separate arrests of Kadafi Muktadir and Abu Sayyaf militant Saddam Jailani, who is believed to be involved in the beheading of electrical engineer Bernard Then on Nov 17.

“We have already given notice to the Philippine authorities that we want to bring them here. We are in the process of sending a formal application,” he told a media conference at Bukit Aman yesterday after a ceremony to mark the promotion of senior police officers.

Khalid said there had been 11 cases of cross-border crimes in Sabah this year.

“It is not something new. We always have to be vigilant,” he said.

The Muktadir brothers were behind the murder of Taiwanese tourist Li Min Hsu, 57, and the kidnapping of his wife Chang An Wei, 58, from Pom Pom resort in November 2013.

This was followed by the kidnapping of Shanghai tourist Gao Huayun, 29, and Filipina resort worker Marcy Darawan, 29, from Singamata Reef Resort on April 1 last year.

Both hostages, who were held in Jolo, were released on May 30 last year.

The group also grabbed Chinese national Yang Zan Lin, 34, who was working at Wonderful Terrace Fish Farm in Lahad Datu waters on May 6 last year.

On June 16 last year, the group abducted fish farm operator Chan Sai Chiun, a 32-year-old from Perak, and his Filipino worker Maslan, 20, from a fish farm in Kunak.

The brothers were also believed to be behind the kidnapping of marine policeman Kons Zakiah Aleip at the Mabul Water Bungalows in Semporna during a raid by gunmen on July 12 last year, during which his colleague Kpl Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was killed.

The latest kidnapping was on May 15 when Then, 39, and restaurant manager Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, were kidnapped at Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan.

Thien was released on Nov 8.
