Guan Eng says CNY open house protest done in ‘bad taste’

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has labelled the ‘RM1.2 billion’ protestors outside his Chinese New Year (CNY) open house yesterday as ‘extremists’.

He said he was not against agitation by the groups but highlighted that choosing to do it on CNY was done in bad taste.

“I feel this is the first time a state Chinese New Year house was ambushed by protestors. It is clear that they have no respect to those celebrating.

“If they have an issue to protest about they could have done it at any other time. What makes it worse, it is based on malicious slander against me,” he said during a visit to the 2016 Penang Hot Air Balloon 2016 fiesta at the Polo Grounds here today.

Yesterday, NGO Persatuan Mukabuku Pulau Pinang led a group of 30 people to protest outside Lim’s CNY open house at the SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas.

The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr. Abdul Rahman Abbas and was attended by 15,000 people.

The group carried placards demanding Lim to answer queries on claims that he had received RM 1.2 billion from Israel, as alleged by a Mohamed Razali Abd Rahman, who claims he was Lim’s former special officer, on several blogs.

The group demanded Lim sue Razali if he claimed the allegations were not true.

Razali, who was apparently Lim’s former officer some five years ago, claimed that the funds were to build an Israeli military base in Penang if the opposition won the last General Election.

Lim had then denied this allegation and that Razali was his officer.

Lim, in response to the group’s call, said he would be suspended as a parliamentarian if he had any dealings with the Israelis.

“If I did such thing I must be in jail or already suspended in Parliament. This is similar to how Nurul Izzah (Anwar, Lembah Pantai MP) could be suspended over the Sulu issue,” he said.

Lim was referring to Izzah’s photograph with Sulu princess Jacel Kiram, which sparked anger among Sabahans. The Sulu sultanate was widely believed to be behind the invasion of Lahad Datu, Sabah in 2013. 21 reads
