KUNSHAN, CHINA: A repeat of the 2014 Thomas Cup was not meant to be for Malaysia who went down 3-2 to Denmark in the semi-finals on Friday.
Lee Chong Wei, as expected delivered Malaysia’s first point when he defeated Viktor Axelsen 23-21, 21-18.
Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong doubled Malaysia’s lead when they saw off scratch pair Mathias Boe-Mads Conrad Petersen 21-18, 21-18.
Denmark, however, got back into the tie through world No 13 Hans Kristian Vittinghus who beat Thomas Cup debutant Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin 21-18, 21-18.
The Danes, then levelled the score at 2-2, through second doubles Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen who beat Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong 10-21, 21-8, 21-13 Denmark’s third singles Emil Holst then delivered the final blow to Malaysia when he saw off Chong Wei Feng 21-15, 21-18.
Denmark will take on Indonesia who had defeated South Korea 3-1 earlier in the final on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in the Uber Cup, South Korea defeated Japan 3-1 in the semi-finals and will go on to face defending champions China who beat India 3-0, in the final on Saturday.-nst
