Two helicopter crashes in Sarawak in last five years

KUCHING: Two helicopter crash cases were reported in Sarawak in the last five years, including one during the 10th state election period.

Following is the Chronology of the two incidents:

April 11, 2011:

A Bell 206 owned by Sabah Air crashed shortly after take-off from Dataran Sibu, killing Capt Sahimi Ghazali, 38.

The pilot had just transported three passengers from Bintangor, including former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s special officer.

The incident happened five days before the state polls on April 16, 2011.

July 20, 2012:

A Eurocopter EC 120 owned by a private company based in Sarawak, crashed into the Sungai Lingga estuary in Sri Aman due to bad weather.

The incident claimed the lives of engineer Peter Ato Mayo, 53, architect Henry Loh, 42, and surveyor Siti Khuzaimah Anuar, 27, while the pilot, Rico Steiger, 35, a German survived.
