‘Childish’ members hampering Pas’ effort to gain mainstream acceptance

KOTA BARU: Pas has admitted that some of its members were “childish” in handling party matters, leading to stumbling blocks in efforts to gain mainstream support.

Pas vice president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the party had to a certain extent failed to present itself favourably before potential voters.

“Such a problem is a huge challenge for us, especially in this day and age (of political fluidity). Some party members are too quick to reveal (internal) matters via unsuitable mediums (social media).

“The approach has tarnished the party’s name and prevented Pas from gaining more public support,” said Mohd Amar in his speech to open the Pas Muslimat assembly last night.

Mohd Amar urged for the issue to be addressed within a year before Pas prepares itself for the next general election.

“It is not something that is impossible to achieve, but it (efforts to seek a solution) needs a collective commitment from party members and leadership.” He told party members to refrain from airing grouses publicly on internal matters.

“You do not have to humiliate or seek revenge against each other, as there are other ways to address grouses. And even if you believe that the fault lies within the party’s leadership, you do not have to go to town over it.

“And at the same time, please do not misconstrue (the advice) as party members are not allowed to point out mistakes committed by party leaders. We only need to address the matter tactfully.”

Later at a press conference pertaining to the hudud-linked private member’s bill, Mohd Amar who is also the deputy Kelantan menteri besar said DAP, MIC and MCA were simply overreacting on the matter.

He believed that each party were simply displaying their political posturing before non-Muslim voters. “I feel that they have their own political agenda for doing so.

Maybe they want to compete with each other to gain votes from the non-Malays. That is a rather unhealthy approach,” he said.-nst
