Malaysia condemns attack on Istanbul airport, calls for unity among Muslims

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on Istanbul’s Attaturk airport, and called on Muslim countries to unite in combating terrorism.

“Malaysia stands firm and ready to unite with all countries in the fight against the scourge of terrorism.

“I strongly urge Muslim nations to unite and increase cooperation, especially in condemning and combating the acts of terror by those who blaspheme the name of Islam,” he said in his latest Facebook and Twitter postings today.

Najib also extended his deepest condolences to the Turkish people and to the families of the victims affected by the attack.

“I am shocked by the news of the terrorist attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk airport.

My deepest condolences to the people of Turkey, especially to the families and victims of this senseless attack on innocent live “Malaysia condemns this heinous act in the strongest terms.”

Najib said this serves as yet another reminder to the need for heightened intelligence cooperation in the war on terror.

Even more so today, he said the message of Islam as a religion of peace, justice and inclusivity needs to be spread far and wide.

Najib said so far, there have been no reports of any Malaysian casualties but the Foreign Ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Three suicide bombers opened fire before blowing themselves up in the main international airport in Istanbul on Tuesday, killing 31 people and wounding close to 150, officials said.

A Turkish official said the vast majority of those killed were Turkish nationals but foreigners were also among the dead.

There have been no reports yet on whether any Malaysians have been affected in the incident.-nst
