High Court verdict on 14 today over Lahad Datu intrusion

KOTA KINABALU: The High Court will deliver its verdict today in the case of 14 people charged in connection with the Tanduo intrusion.

Mitigation is expected to take place, depending on the verdict, before judge Stephen Chung sentences them, along with five who pleaded guilty on Feb 23.

The trial began on Jan 6, 2014, with 30 people (27 Filipinos and three Malaysians) accused of waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, harbouring terrorists, being members of a terrorist group and recruiting terrorists.

This was following the Lahad Datu stand-off from Feb 11, 2013, to March 24, 2013, which saw so-called Sulu sultanate followers entering Kampung Tanduo over territorial claims over parts of eastern Sabah.

Fifty-six militants, six civilians and 10 Malaysian security officers were killed during the stand-off.

On Feb 5, the High Court here acquitted 11 of the Philippine nationals, while 19 were ordered to enter their defence.

The 13 Filipinos who entered defence are represented by Datuk N. Sivananthan. Abdul Gani Zelika represents the only Malaysian.-NST
