Kota Tinggi boat wreck: Seven month-pregnant woman among those found dead

KOTA TINGGI: Two more bodies from Saturday’s boat wreck in Pantai Batu Layar were discovered this morning.

The two bodies, both male, were found by beach-goers some 500 metres away from the last point where the boat sank between the shallow rocks located 100 metres from shore.

Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Rahmat Othman said that with the discovery of the two bodies, the death toll from the tragedy now stands at 11, including an unborn baby girl.

“The unborn child was from a victim who was seven-months pregnant. She was found on the second day,” said Rahmat when contacted. He said the two bodies were found some 200m apart from each other around 7.30am today.

Rahmat said the search and rescue operation for the remaining 20 victims believed to still be missing are ongoing.

“We resumed the SAR operation this morning but with minimal men on the ground. However, we will increase the number of auxiliary police personnel to comb the beach by noon,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the wreckage from the incident was towed by Pengerang marine police around 5am today and is now kept at the marine police jetty in Penebok, Pengerang.

It is learnt that the two-metre wide boat, which is fitted with three 200 hp engines, can accommodate at least 60 passengers at a time.-nst
