Najib’s position as PM safe despite 1MDB issue, says IDEAS

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s position as Prime Minister is secure despite action initiated by the United States and Singapore authorities over assets linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) chief executive officer Wan Saiful Wan Jan said Najib’s position as the prime minister cannot be threatened by any outside powers.

“I remain consistent with my view that Najib’s political future can only be threatened by the members and leaders of Umno and not by any outside powers.

“Najib’s position as Prime Minister is secure as long as his position as Umno’s president is safe. Umno members generally decide based on local considerations, and just like any other political party they will prioritise their own political survival,” he said in a statement today.

Wan Saiful said Umno cannot be swayed despite the damage inflicted by the civil action against 1MDB.

“Statements such as that we heard yesterday from Communications Minister (Datuk Seri Salleh Syed Keruak) that “1MDB has been the subject of unprecedented politically-motivated attacks, the objectives of which were to unseat a democratically-elected head of government” are indicative of why Najib’s political future will remain secure despite this recent development,” he said.

Wan Saiful said the actions taken by the US and Singapore authorities were damaging to Malaysia’s reputation.

“However, I don’t think these actions will inflict long-term damage to the bilateral relationships between Malaysia and the US or Malaysia and Singapore. The relationships between us and these countries go back many decades.

“We may experience some strain and tension in the immediate future, but over time I believe we will get through the rough patches,” he said, noting that it was important for Malaysia to maintain good relationships with both countries.
