No one to be spared police action if they incite protests, says IGP

MALACCA: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has warned that no one will be spared from police action if they incite street protests.

He issued the stern reminder to opportunists who are calling for street protests with regards to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ)’s civil complaint against 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

“Don’t try to incite the people to take to the streets.

“If there are any parties who threaten the peace and security of this country by doing so, police will not hesitate to take action against them,” he told reporters at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the state police headquarters in Bukit Beruang here.

Khalid said any action to be taken will be based on the law, irrespective of who the groups represent.

His warning came after a proposed gathering by Bersih and the Red Shirts faction over the issue.

“This goes for whoever they are, red shirts, blue shirts, or green shirts.

“If they threaten public order, we will take action,” he said.

Present were Malacca Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and state police chief Datuk Ramli Din.

On the Red Shirts gathering today (Saturday), Khalid acknowledged that the police had detected calls for gatherings to be held in several locations in the city and elsewhere.

“I advise members of the public not to be influenced by the incitement of these irresponsible people.

“We have laws in this country.

“Don’t try to go above the law.” Khalid’s warning was also directed against those who are trying to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak through street protests.

It was reported that a gathering will be held this afternoon by the Red-Shirt rally-goers in “defence of constitutional democracy” near the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur.

On Friday, Bersih 2.0 committee member Maria Chin Abdullah also said that they were in negotiations with civil society and various non-governmental organisations for the rally to be held soon.
