Ustaz held to help probe

ALOR SETAR: An ustaz who allegedly caned three religious school students for running away from their madrasah in Sungai Petani has been arrested.

Police picked up the 27-year-old religious teacher at his house in Parit Buntar, Perak, at about 10pm on Thursday.

A Facebook posting showing one of the alleged victims with cane marks on his body and a wound on the head had earlier gone viral, prompting the son of the madrasah owner to lodge a police report at about noon on Thursday that the caning was done by a replacement ustaz.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Md Zukir Md Isa said the suspect was under remand until Aug 1.

He said initial investigations revealed that the replacement ustaz was believed to have caned the boys in the early hours of Monday for running away from the madrasah.

He added that the ustaz had found the three boys near the Kuala Muda district police headquarters in Sungai Petani and brought them back to the school, where he allegedly caned them in a lecture room in front of other students.

The boys, two of whom are aged 10 while the other is 12, sustained bruises on their bodies and limbs.

One of them was also injured on the head.

ACP Md Zukir said all three were sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for treatment.-thestar
