Fallen crane tragedy: Victim finally laid to rest

GEORGE TOWN: A sombre air enveloped the funeral of Chin Khoon Sing today, who was tragically killed when her car was crushed by a fallen crane hook in Kuala Lumpur last Thursday.

Family and friends paid tribute to the 23-year-old at the Lebuh Noordin flats, amid chanting led by a Buddhist priest.

The victim’s close friends were seen sobbing in silence at the casket as the crowd gathered to bid their final tearful farewell.

The cortège left for the Batu Gantong Crematorium at 10.30am under cloudless skies with Chin’s brothers Khoon Ying, 26, and Khoon Feng, 11 leading the entourage.

They walked behind the hearse for about 800 meters, passing through Lebuh Noordin, Jalan C.Y. Choy before stopping at Jalan Magazine.

A final round funeral rites were performed before the casket was pushed into the incinerator. Khoon Sing’s cousin, Tan Chia Chia, 26, who grew up together with the victim, lost her composure and broke down in tears.

Tan cried incessantly and several relatives took turns to hug her. That did little to console her as she bent forward in emotional agony.

Also in tears were Khoon Sing’s father Chee Weng, 58, mother Yeoh Ang Hooi, 51, as well as Khoon Ying.

In the tragedy, Chin was driving along Jalan Raja Chulan when a crane hook from on top a building fell on her vehicle, killing her instantly.

Police have established an element of negligence behind the incident, and is set to act against the crane operator for causing death by negligence under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code.
