MCA wants crane operator arrested and charged

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA wants the crane driver responsible for Thursday’s accident that killed a woman to be arrested and charged.

Its party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic) wants authorities to track down and detain the crane operator, who fled the scene following the mishap.

The driver has been identified as an Indonesian.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, crane drivers have to be Malaysians.

“The contractor and company that supplied the crane must be hauled too.

“We also want the relevant authorities concerned to come up with some explanations,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

On Thursday, 23-year-old Chin Khoon Sing died a week before her 24th birthday when part of a crane fell onto her Perodua Kelisa.

The victim, from George Town, Penang, was driving along Jalan Raja Chulan at about 7.15pm Thursday when a crane hook, believed to be from a construction site, snapped and fell from over 20 storeys on her car.

Chin was killed instantly.

Liow added that all construction sites near public areas and roads must ensure public safety at all times.

“How can this kind of negligence exist in a construction site in the middle of the city?

“Where were the authorities who are responsible to keep building contractors in check?

“We must have answers and remedial actions quickly,“ said Liow, who is also the Transport Minister.

Liow said he was “shocked, saddened and angry that Chin was robbed off her life at such a tender age and in this manner.

“My deepest condolences go to her family,” he said.-thestar
