Morning downpour causes flash floods in Klang Valley

PETALING JAYA: A heavy downpour on Tuesday morning caused massive traffic delays along major roads in the Klang Valley.

Road users endured a long commute to work as the heavy rain, which lasted more than two hours, resulted in flash floods around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Star Media Radio Traffic reported a flood along the road heading to the Subang Airport and from Ara Damansara, causing a crawl from the Federal Highway exit and Citta Mall.

Another flash flood was reported near the Sungai Rasau toll in Shah Alam, causing delays for several kilometres from Taman Berkeley in Klang to the Batu 3 intersection.

At Persiaran Surian in Kota Damansara, a flash flood at the underpass near Sunway Giza saw traffic backed up from Pelangi Damansara and Sierra Damansara.

“The Federal Highway, backed up at the Sg Rasau toll – Shah Alam, that’s causing delays from Taman Berkeley due to flash flood,” Star Media Radio Traffic said in a Twitter update at 8.20am.

Heading into the city, traffic was backed up from Sungai Besi towards Jalan Loke Yew and on to Jalan Tun Razak.

Road users can also expect further delays in both directions from Plaza Pantai to the Subang Golf Club.

Stalled vehicles were also earlier reported near the Penchala Tunnel heading to Bandar Utama and near the 9th Mile toll in Cheras, causing further congestion along those roads.

Meanwhile, a set of faulty traffic lights, possibly caused by the storm, added to the morning crawl from the USJ toll plaza on the Elite Highway and the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) from Puchong Intan and Bukit Puchong.

The heavy rain did, however, provide some clear skies for city dwellers after the haze over the last few days.-thestar
