‘Sultan of Malacca’ claims trial to cheating businessman of RM2,100

JOHOR BARU: A 48-year-old security guard claimed trial to three separate charges of cheating another man of a total of RM2,100 by claiming to be the Sultan of Malacca and promising to provide the related royal attire.

Sabirin Yusof was charged with cheating businessman Poniran Sumardi, 45, by convincing the latter that he was the Malacca Sultan and that he could help obtain the royal Malacca attire while cheating him of the money at No. 129, Jalan Pesona 12, Taman Pelangi Indah, here between early May until late May this year.

The charges were under Section 420 of Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of not less than a year and not more than 10 years and whipping and could be fined upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Asmah Zainal Ariffin proposed bail to be set at RM5,000 for each charge.

However, magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 4 for submission of documents for the case. Sabirin was represented by lawyer Ahmad Yusri Ahmad Fuad.-nst
