Thousands throng Dataran Merdeka to witness National Day parade

KUALA LUMPUR: They come from different walks of life but as thousands thronged Dataran Merdeka this morning, they showcased what Sehati Sejiwa (One Heart One Soul) truly means.

The theme, which was selected for its second consecutive year, describes the people’s unity in diversified nation.

The early morning rain did not dampen the spectators’ spirit as they inched their way through and flocked each corner of the square to witness the National Day parade.

The Merdeka celebration began with Yang diPertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah receiving the royal salute followed by the singing of the national anthem Negaraku and recital of Rukun Negara led by school student Hilal Asraf from Putrajaya.

Characters from the popular local animation BoBoiBoy also made an appearance with a short skit, much to the delight of the audience.

Joining the crowd were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Cabinet ministers and government officials.
