Ex-civil servant found with serow parts used to make traditional medicine

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) arrested a man believed to have produced traditional medicine using various parts of serow in Rembau, yesterday.

State Perhilitan director Wan Mat Wan Harun said this was an offence as serow have been classified as an endangered species.

Serow are goat or antelope-like mammals. Its existence is under threat due to habitat loss and hunting.

“We raided a house in Lubok China, near the Malacca border, and found various parts of the animal in two plastic boxes filled with oil.

“We found two heads, 12 legs and one length of skin,” he told a press conference at the state headquarters, this morning.

Wan Mat said inspections revealed that the 60-year-old man did not possess a special permit for the animal.

He was arrested for further investigation. He said the former civil servant was released on police bail but will be charged in court soon.

The case is being investigated under Section 68(2)(c) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 which carries a fine not less than RM100,000 and not more than RM500,000 with a maximum five-years’ jail term.-nst
