Special committee set up to investigate deadly Eimarace crash

KUANTAN: The Higher Education Ministry has set up a special committee to investigate the deadly buggy crash at the Eimarace yesterday.

Its Secretary-general, Tan Sri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur, said minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh ordered the committee, comprising the Educational Innovation in Motorsport and Automotive Race (Eimarace), the event organiser, and ministry officers to look into all aspects that led to the crash.

“We have been instructed to immediately form a special committee to investigate the incident thoroughly.

“That’s all that I can say for now,” she said after visiting seven year-old Muhammad Izz Danial Izwan, who was badly injured in the incident.

In the 11.30am tragedy yesterday, during the seventh lap of the Eimarace, a buggy driver lost control of his 131cc vehicle while trying to overtake two others and slammed into spectators.

Izz Danial’s father, Izwan Isa, 39, and his little sister, Nurzulaikha, 5, were killed in the incident, while his mother, Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, sustained light injuries.

Eimarace was organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with the cooperation of Tourism Pahang.

The race was cancelled following the tragedy.-nst
