Malaysia records 7th Zika case, second for Sabah

PUTRAJAYA : The Health Ministry has received a report on the country’s seventh Zika case, this time involving a 60-year-old woman in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

This is the second Zika case reported in the state after the first one on Sept 3 involving a 61-year-old man in Likas.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the woman sought treatment at a private hospital on Sep 24 after showing signs of rashes.

“Blood and urine tests showed she tested positive for Zika.”

“Further investigation revealed that the patient had not visited any Zika-affected countries recently and had not met with any patients infected with the virus.

“Her husband and children, who live in the same house, did not show any signs of the disease,” he said in a statement today.

The ministry, said Noor Hisham, has conducted vector control activities such as larvaciding, health education and fogging at 258 premises in the residential locality and other places visited by the patient.

From Sep 1 to 29, seven cases of Zika were reported nationwide. In the same period, 163 patients had shown symptoms and signs of Zika infection but the results of the tests came out negative.
