Govt officer held for receiving half-a-million ringgit bribe

PUTRAJAYA: A government officer has been held for allegedly accepting around RM500,000 in bribes from a rice wholesaler here.

The assistant enforcement officer, attached with the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, has been remanded to facilitate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation into the alleged graft and abuse of power.

The 57-year-old officer, who is with the Ministry’s rice-control division, was said to have asked for inducement in return for approval of the company’s application to get the quota for the subsidised ST15 rice.

When anti-graft officers nabbed him at his office on Wednesday, they found cash amounting to RM10,113 on him and another RM51,100 in his car.

He was brought before magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman, who ordered the officer to be remanded for six days.-thestar
