K-Pop idol may do jail time for fraud

A Korean prosecutor has asked a judge yet again to sentence Kang Sung-hoon, a member of one-time legendary K-pop group Sechs Kies, to four years in prison for fraud charges.

“Kang was bailed out last year because he promised to reach an agreement with the victims. However, he failed to repay the debt,” the prosecutor said at the trial held at the Seoul Northern District Court 9th January.

The former idol star borrowed about 1 billion won (approximately RM2.9 million) from three people between June in 2009 and November in 2010 but he did not pay off his debt.

In April in 2012, Kang was charged with fraud and given a four-year sentence by the prosecution.

The courts granted Kang’s application for bail last September a few days before the final trial, because Kang showed willingness to repay the victims by submitting letters of apology.

“Kang is hoping to make a comeback with Sechs Kies. We hope he will be given the benefit of the doubt,” Kang’s defendants said.

Meanwhile, Jang Soo-won and Kim Jae-deok, other members from Sechs Kies, also attended the trial.

The final trial of Kang will be held in Seoul on 23rd January, 2012.

Kang, 32, made his debut in 1997 as a lead vocalist formerly from the group Sechs Kies.

After the group disbanded in 2000, Kang kicked off his solo career in 2001 and has since released four studio albums featuring ballad songs.
