SELAYANG: Programme coordinator for a human rights group Pusat Komas, Lena Hendry is expected to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court at 9am Thursday, for organising a screening of a controversial documentary.

The film, No Fire Zone explores the oppression by the Sri Lankan government against Tamils in the island country.

Lena said she suspects, she would be charged under the Film Censorship Act 2002.

“It is a baseless accusation and selective persecution based on pressure by a third party.

“Government agencies should be fair and just in carrying out their duties and not follow the hands of the political masters,” she said on Wednesday.

Responding to the development, Pusat Komas director Tan Jo Hann, in a statement said, “This is the utmost form of harassment and direct violation of freedom of speech, assembly and association by the Malaysian authorities guaranteed for under Article 10 of the Malaysian Constitution”.

It was reported that Home Ministry and Immigration officials had arrested three Pusat Komas employees, including Hendry, after the screening of the documentary at the Kl/Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on July 3.

The officers also reportedly forced some 150-audience members there to flash their MyKads.
