GEORGE TOWN: Police detained 250 members of outlawed Voluntary Police Unit (PPS) after their Merdeka Day march-past here.

Earlier at about 10am, the PPS team were seen in their trademark purple vests in their march past at the opposite the Town Hall.

Moments later, police moved in and brought them to the Lebuh Pantai police station.

Meanwhile, PPS chief Phee Boon Poh described the action taken by the police as ‘unbelievable’.

“They were detained for illegal assembly. At the Merdeka Day march-past. It is unbelievable,” he said when met at the Esplanade grounds.

It was learnt that those detained will be brought to the Northeast district police headquarters to be processed.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar warned the members of the outlawed Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit to surrender or face arrests.

He said this in a tweet earlier that read: “The actions taken by police on PPS–the right thing to do is to surrender immddiately before we hunt you down at your homes.”
