JOHOR BARU: Efforts will be made to upgrade and improve the country’s railway services to ensure better transportation logistics, especially on the ferrying of cargo between trading ports, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said businesses were now relying more on lorries and heavy vehicles to transport goods between ports. Such methods could pose a safety hazard to other road users, he added.

Liow said an upgrade of the railway services would be a good way to improve logistics, adding that roads would suffer less wear and tear due to usage by heavy vehicles.

He said the move was part of the plan of the urban public transportation division under the National Key Result Area (NKRA) programme.

“We want to make our existing railways better, faster and more convenient for more seamless cargo transportation,” he said after launching the Federation of Hakka Associations of Malaysia annual general meeting here yesterday.

Liow said plans to upgrade railway tracks also included the Pasir Gudang port line to various ports in Kuala Lumpur.

He also said the Government was working to upgrade the MRT, LRT and bus services, including improving their coordination.

He was responding to the federation’s call to the Government to improve the country’s public transportation system.

Liow also said the Government was waiting for Singapore’s response to identify and propose its three terminals in the island republic for the Malaysia-Singapore high-speed rail (HSR) link service.

“Once Singapore has identified its stations, we will be able to go ahead and submit our tender,” he said, adding that he would announce the matter in detail soon.

In his speech, Liow, who is also MCA president, urged the Chinese community to join in the Govern-ment’s retail stores transformation programme (Tukar).

He also called on the party’s leaders to understand the Government’s initiatives in order to provide the right information to the community, so that they would join in the country’s efforts to make Malaysia a high-income nation.
