KOTA BARU: An army border patrol is believed to have foiled an attempt by a group of gun runners when it stumbled on seven men and a gunny sack of automatic rifles near Pisang Raut in Tumpat.

The soldiers spotted the suspected smugglers who were all on a boat except for one man on the bank of Sungai Golok at about 8pm on Friday, said Kelantan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim.

“The man on the riverbank had the sack in his hands. When he spotted the soldiers, he dumped it on the ground and swam away from the patrol unit,” he said. “The others in the boat also fled.”

When the soldiers opened the sack, they found two M16s and an AK47 that had been dismantled.

The assault rifles were found to be serviceable after they were reassembled, said DCP Mazlan at a press conference yesterday.

The commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade Brig-Jen Datuk Azmy Yahya was also present.

Police suspect the smugglers were members of a cross-border gun-running syndicate.

“I appeal to anyone with information on this syndicate or its operations to come forward and assist the police,” DCP Mazlan said.

He added that the police were working with their Thai counterparts on the case, which was being investigated under Section 7(1) of the Firearms Act 1972.
