No unhealthy air quality readings recorded nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: No areas in the country recorded unhealthy air readings under the Air Pollutant Index (API) Thursday.

According to a Department of Environment statement here, readings at 52 air quality monitoring stations at 11am showed 16 locations had good air quality while 36 locations were at moderate level.

The statement also said the status of air quality in several areas in the north and west coast of Peninsular Malaysia improved with lower API readings.

However, the air quality was still unstable as the continuous hot weather in the region resulted in more hotspots found in Sumatra, Indonesia.

As at Wednesday, the number of hotspots in Sumatra was still high at 408 compared with 428 a day earlier.

“The influence of the southwest monsoon blowing from hotspots or areas of open burning affected the air quality of several areas in the west coast of the peninsular.

“The heavy downpour at several areas in the Klang Valley yesterday (Wednesday) evening has helped to reduce the effects of cross-border haze,” the statement said.

According to the statement, hot and dry weather was expected until October.
