Giger conquers second stage to retain yellow jersey in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: Fabian Giger (pic) retained his yellow jersey after emerging victorious in Stage Two of the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC) yesterday.

Giger, of Switzerland and representing Rabobank-Giant Offroad Team, covered the 45km challenge in 2’10:14.43 while last year’s overall champion Karl Platt of Germany, representing Team Bulls, clocked 2’10:29.56 to finish second.

Giger’s team-mate Emil Lindgren of Sweden was third in 2’14:11.45.

No Malaysian rider finished among the top 10 in the men’s Open event.

In the women’s Open event, Stage One winner Lea Davison of the United States, representing Team Specalized, retained her pink jersey as the leader after clocking 2’44:02 to finish ahead of Norway’s Elisabeth Sveum (2’48:20.56) and Slovakia’s Janka Stevkova (2’54:13.34).

Malaysian rider Masziyaton Mohd Radzi of Kedah SBS Giant could only manage 10th spot in 3’29:25.34.

Giger described yesterday’s race as very tough due to heavy rain.

“I am happy to win again after the first stage triumph yesterday. The challenge (LIMBC) is halfway now and we have three more stages to go. I’ve been feeling very good these two days and I am in good shape,” he said.
