GE13: PAS to announce full candidates list only after EC sets nomination, polling dates

PAS will only announce its full candidates list after the Election Commission sets the nomination and polling dates, said its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi said the list was “99.9%” ready, with discussions still ongoing for “not more than 10 seats”.

On Sunday, Hadi confirmed that the party would contest 76 parliamentary seats, with negotiations ongoing for it to contest 237 state seats.

In the 2008 general election, PKR contested 97 parliamentary seats – the biggest number in Pakatan Rakyat – winning 31.

PAS candidates stood for 66 parliamentary seats and won 23, while DAP contested 47 and won 28.

PAS contested for the most states seats with 232, against PKR’s 171 and DAP’s 102.

Hadi said the party was also hopeful of fielding non-Malay and non-Muslim candidates in the elections.

“God willing, PAS will have candidates who are Chinese, Indian and Iban,” he told reporters after giving a talk entitled “Welfare state: Perception and reality” here.

Asked whether he was ready to take on the role of Prime Minister, Hadi said Pakatan should focus on winning the polls first.

He said that in Malaysia, the party has to win the elections first before picking its leader.

“It is not like in the United States, where there are presidential candidates,” he said.

When pressed further, Hadi said he had not considered the Prime Minister’s position but was ready to be the khadam rakyat (people’s servant).
