SEREMBAN: CIMB Bank assistant manager Udamjit Singh, who was killed in the Genting bus crash, was supposed to have signed a deal today to buy a plot of land to build a house for his mother and siblings.

The 41-year-old bachelor, who was the oldest of five siblings, was buying the plot in Taman Bukit Kaya here as he wanted them to stay together.

This was revealed by his brother Sukhver Singh, who described Udamjit as a filial son and responsible brother and one who always put the interests of others before his.

“He decided to buy the plot after we suggested to him that we should buy houses in the same residential area.

“However, he then said it would be better if we could stay together in one big house rather than live separately,” he said at the family home in Taman Bukit Nanas.

Udam, who served CIMB for 21 years until his death, was attached to the bank’s capital and financial market operations department in Kuala Lumpur and had previously served as manager for the Genting Highlands branch for three years.

Sukhver said that although Udamjit was transferred to Kuala Lumpur, he or a colleague would take turns to visit the Genting branch on Wednesdays for work purposes.

“Although my brother owned a car, he didn’t drive to his workplace in Kuala Lumpur from here due to traffic congestion,” he said, adding that Udamjit also took public transport when travelling to and from the highlands.

He said that according to colleagues, Udamjit normally took the bus back to Kuala Lumpur from Genting at about noon or after 4pm.

“He had never taken the bus at other times, as was the case on the said day,” he said.

Udamjit was cremated at the Jalan Templer crematorium yesterday.
