Penang Malay Congress urges Guan Eng to resign

lim guan eng latestGEORGE TOWN: A non-governmental organisation, Penang Malay Congress (PMC) has urged Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to quit as DAP secretary-general with immediate effect for allegedly failing in his duty to hold a legitimate central executive committee (CEC) election for the party.
PMC president Rahmad Isahak alleged that Lim caused the CEC fiasco, which happened on December 15 last year, and opted to ignore it.

“Lim had more than ample time to rectify the matter and explain the alleged irregularities of the CEC results to the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

“But he did not address the allegations and let the matter dragged until the RoS declared the CEC results invalid. Lim is seen as a burden and liability to the DAP so he is no longer fit to be the party’s secretary-general,” Rahmad told a press conference here today.

The RoS on Tuesday issued a notice to the DAP, ordering it to hold a fresh CEC election but the party leadership had refused to do so.

It was reported that a ‘technical glitch’ occurred in the CEC results in December last year when the party’s national congress was held in Penang. The alleged glitch affected the total number of votes garnered by two CEC candidates – party activist Vincent Wu and Lim’s political secretary Zairil Khir Johari.

After the glitch, Wu dropped to the 26th spot from his original sixth spot, giving way to Zairil, who was originally in the 39th position, to be moved up to the 20th. This enabled Zairil to be elected a CEC member.

Apart from the glitch, which raised questions among party members, 753 DAP members had also alleged that they were denied their rights as delegates to attend the national congress and vote in the CEC election.

Yesterday, Lim in a press conference said the party was taking legal action against the NST for its reports that 753 party delegates were denied their rights to attend the party’s national congress.

He accused the newspaper of publishing “misleading reports”, denying that the 753 delegates were not informed about attending the congress.
