“The Wolverine” claws to victory

hugh jackman“The Wolverine” had a strong debut last weekend (25 to 28 July) at the box office, as the film managed to take the top spot in Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S.!

The multi-talented Australian hunk Hugh Jackman reprises his role as everyone’s favourite adamantium hero in Marvel’s follow-up to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, with Logan/Wolverine heading to Japan and becoming embroiled in a conflict there that forces him to confront his own demons.

Despite its successful opening lead, “The Wolverine” opening weekend was a far cry from the last few “X-Men” movies, only grossing USD 53.1 million.

In both Malaysia and Singapore, “Pacific Rim” fell from the top spot to second place, but in Malaysia, third place goes to family-friendly animation “Turbo” by Dreamworks, while in Singapore, third place goes to none other than “Despicable Me 2”, which is another family-friendly animated film.

In the U.S, “The Wolverine” beat current favourite scream-fest “The Conjuring”, directed by James Wan of “Saw” and “Insidious” fame.
“The Conjuring” is based upon real case files by Ed and Lorraine Warren about paranormal investigators who help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. “Despicable Me 2” dropped a notch to third place.

Other new movies that opened over the weekend in Malaysia are “Pattathu Yaanai”, “Sonna Puriyathu”, “Bajatey Raho”, “Imaginaerum”, “Apartment 1303”, “SDU: Special Duties Unit” and “Misteri Bisikan Pontianak”.

Other new movies that opened over the weekend in Singapore are “Bajatey Raho”, “Disconnect”, “Mr Go”, “SDU: Sex Duties Unit”, and “Before Midnight”.
