KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has no plans as yet to abolish other forms of subsidies, especially petrol and diesel, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

“We will not make such a drastic move as it will burden the rakyat.

“Besides, the subsidy rate is dependent on the economic climate, the international market price of petrol, and the Government’s ability to provide subsidies,” he said in response to a question by Alice Lau Kiong Yieng (Lanang) on Wednesday.

He also said the Government is set to increase electricity supply especially to those in rural areas who had to buy diesel for their generator sets.

Lau had asked whether the Government will further reduce the petrol subsidy this year and next year, and its plans to ease the people’s burden following the subsidy cut for sugar.

Ahmad said subsidies will continue but will be rationalised to target the groups most in need of them.

“Also, the RM442.2mil saved on cutting sugar subsidy is going to healthcare, with 100% of the amount going to the establishment of 50 1Malaysia clinics, 30 Klinik Desa, and employment of 6,800 nurses,” he said.
