PETALING JAYA: Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam suffered a minor injury in the neck but his bodyguard fractured his ribs and injured his abdomen when their car crashed into lorry Wednesday night.

In a statement Thursday, Health Deputy Director General Datuk Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai said that Dr Subramaniam was stable and has been advised to rest at the Malacca General Hospital.

At approximately 8pm, Dr. Subramaniam’s car was involved in the crash at KM 220.6 of the North-South Expressway near Pedas-Linggi Wednesday night and was initially taken to Alor Gajah hospital before being transferred to Malacca city, he said.

The bodyguard was in a stable condition and being treated conservatively at the Malacca General Hospital, said Dr Jeyaindran.
Malacca police chief Datuk Chua Ghee Lye had said Wednesday night that, based on the preliminary findings, the car was believed to have knocked into the back of a lorry which suddenly switched lanes from the middle to the right lane.

Chua said the lorry involved drove off from the accident scene and police were tracing the vehicle.

The ambulance, which brought Dr Subramaniam, arrived at MGH at 11.10pm and he was conscious with braces to support his neck.

Malacca Yang Dipertua Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob visited the victims at the hospital Wednesday.

Malacca MIC chairman Datuk M.S. Mahadevan said the incident occurred when Dr Subramaniam was on his way to Malacca to attend a meeting to discuss the organisation of the MIC General Assembly which will be held on Nov 30 here.

He said Dr Subramaniam, who is also the deputy president of MIC, was in a stable condition.

“He is ok, can speak no problem, so far we know he sustained only a minor injury on the neck and is being treated,” he told Bernama here.
