JOHOR BARU: The street art fever has caught on in the city with yet another making its appearance at an alley in Taman Johor Jaya.

This time, the art depicts the character of Captain Hook, the archenemy in the play Peter Pan, climbing up a bamboo ladder towards a window while two boys threaten him with a slingshot and a broom.

There is also a faint pencil drawing of a girl in baju kurung, holding a feather duster in the alley along Jalan Ros Merah 3/2.

All the graffiti are done by local artists.

Physiologist S. Suhania, 21, who works nearby, described the art as a creative way of showing Malaysia’s multi-cultural society seemingly working together to combat crime.

“The drawing has a positive message and it is colourful and attractive,” she said.

Suhania and her colleagues, R. Kavita, 23, and M. Nava, 27, stopped by to look at the art during their lunch break here yesterday.

Salesgirl Kelly Chang, 35, who was spotted snapping pictures of the art with her colleagues, said she had noticed it on Saturday.

“I love seeing the area becoming livelier with many pieces of art being drawn here.

“I hope that the local authorities will not whitewash this wall because it shows the three main races working together to combat crime,” she said.

The Captain Hook street art, located beside the DAP community centre, was commissioned by Johor Jaya assemblyman Liaw Cai Tung in conjunction with Crime Awareness Month in her constituency next month.

“It is drawn by four people who started on it last week. It is to remind the public that we can work together to fight crime as this area is prone to crime,” said Liaw, who is from DAP.

The area was in the spotlight recently after Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic painted the controversial “Lego Man” in Taman Molek, which was subsequently whitewashed by the local council.

Zacharevic has two other pieces of art in Jalan Ros Merah.
