YANGON: The Malaysian women’s hockey team turned on the power to crush Cambodia 36-0 for their second win in as many days at the Thein Phyu Stadium in Yangon on Saturday, in what proved to be a new world hockey record.

The previous world record for the highest score in an international match was held by Argentina after they defeated Peru 26-0 at the South American Women’s Championships in Santiago, Chile, on March 23, 2003, according to

Averaging a goal in less than every two minutes, the Malaysians ran riot over a young Cambodian side that could hardly string together a couple of passes.

Noor Hasliza Ali was the top scorer for the national side with six goals, while Nuraini Abdul Rashid and Fazillah Silin both contributed five goals each in the rout.

Norbaili Hashim and Norazlin Sumantri both sounded the board four times, while Rabiatul Mohamed, Norhidayah Ahmad Bokhari and skipper Nadia Abdul Rahman netted a brace each and Norashikin Halim, Nurul Nabila Mansur, Raja Norshabuddin, Siti Nor Amarina, and Surizan Awang Noh all contributed a goal each.

Cambodia also scored an own goal to help Malaysia on their way to the huge win.

It was a second heavy loss for the Cambodians, who had gone down 0-26 to Thailand in their opening match on Friday.

“I was expecting a big win, but not by this much. I don’t know if the scoreline is a SEA Games record in hockey,” said Malaysian women’s coach Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim.

“Despite playing under the hot afternoon sun, my players were relaxed and complied with the instructions to play a fast attacking game. This fantastic result will be advantageous if the fight for a final berth is determined on goal difference.”

The Malaysian women will have a rest day on Sunday before facing Singapore on Monday.

“Together with Thailand, Singapore are our main rivals here. We can beat them if we are able to maintain the same level of fast attacking game,” said the former international.
