KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is seeking help from all quarters to speed up repair works for the Langkawi Sky Bridge, which has been closed for 20 months now.
Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said it would seek help from all relevant parties, including the state government, to repair the bridge.
“Whatever help we can get – like fast approval from the state government or to quickly bring in the required parts to Langkawi – will be greatly appreciated.
“However, we will not compromise on visitor safety and if it takes time to ensure that all is good with the bridge, then so be it,” he said after launching the new livery for Firefly Airlines in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014 yesterday.
The Star had reported that the Sky Bridge was closed for almost 20 months due to a delay in getting funds and foreign consultants to conduct maintenance work.
The bridge, part of an RM80mil cable car project, is due to reopen only late this year.
Many tourists had expressed disappointment to hear that the famed engineering marvel was still closed despite it being VMY2014.
On the new livery for the Firefly aircraft, Mohamed Nazri said the minstry expected its advertising campaign to reach 1.5 million passengers a year throughout the region.
The new livery for the 12 Firefly aircraft features the VMY2014 logo and the “Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia” theme while the interior is decorated with visuals of Malaysian tourist attractions.
Mohamed Nazri said the ministry, along with Tourism Malaysia, was also organising a sales mission to Europe and taking part in the Internationale Tourismus Borse, the world’s largest tourism convention, in Berlin, Germany.
“We will be in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan and Berlin between Feb 25 and March 9. We are also using ITB Berlin as a platform to introduce the Royal Belum Rainforest as an ecotourism destination for the European market,” he said.
The ministry would be launching a series of television commercials for this purpose.
