KUALA LUMPUR: Phase Two of the Immigration Department’s sweep against illegal immigrants saw 69 employers arrested in operations conducted at 915 locations nationwide.

The latest operations conducted in the city centre here yesterday also found 195 foreign workers without valid documents out of the 500 foreigners screened.

Those detained were from Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

The joint operations, which also involved Rela, the National Registration Department, City Hall as well as technicians handling the National Enforcement and Registration System, were led by 162 personnel from the Immigration Department.

Two Malaysian women who had hired unregistered foreigners and a Myanmar man who owned a pub were also detained.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged business owners not to hire foreigners to run their businesses, especially those here on social visit passes.

“Malaysians should be running their own businesses and not leasing their licences to foreigners. We should not be encouraging foreigners to open businesses,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the operation outside the Pudu bus terminal.

He also called on local authorities to enforce the conditions of business licences as the Immigration Act only governed foreigners.
