KOTA KINABALU: An eight-year-old boy was blissfully unaware of the terror ride he was subjected to when his mother’s vehicle was carjacked minutes after she dashed out to buy bread outside his school in Likas here.

The primary two pupil of SRJK Likas Chung Hwa had slept through the 6km journey after the suspect(s) drove from his school to Asia City in town before abandoning the car.

The 42-year-old mother, identified as Chung, had parked her car outside the school compound at about 6am yesterday and left her son sleeping on the backseat with the car engine running.

She had gone to a van selling bread parked within the school’s general parking area, but when she turned around a few minutes later, both her car and son were missing.

Police were immediately alerted.

The boy only realised he was a victim of carjacking after a passer- by spotted the car parked in Asia City at about 7.30am and alerted the police.

Police were already on the case as the mother had earlier reported the theft of her Toyota Vios with her son inside at 6.10am.

“It is lucky he slept through the ordeal, it could have been traumatic for the boy,” said Kota Kinabalu deputy police chief Supt M. Chandra, who was at the scene.

Supt Chandra said at the moment they could not establish if there were more than one person who stole the car. Witnesses are urged to assist in police investigations.

“We are checking if there were any CCTV footages available in Asia City,” he said, adding that police believed it was car theft attempt.
