PUTRAJAYA: All European flights operated by Malaysia Airlines would be taking alternative routes and avoiding the usual route with immediate effect.
The usual flight route, the national carrier said, was earlier declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The statement by the airline also said that the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) has stated that ?the airspace Flight MH17 was traversing was not subject to restrictions.
MH17, which was carrying 298 people, comprising of 283 passengers, including three infants of various nationalities and 15 crew of Malaysian nationality, had gone down in eastern Ukraine.
The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur and it had not made a distress call.
MAS also said it is currently in the process of notifying the next-of-kin of the passengers and crew and is focused on working with emergency responders and authorities.
“We will mobilise our full support to provide all possible care to the next-of-kin. We are also deploying our Go Team to Amsterdam with a group of caregivers and volunteers to assist the family members of the passengers,” it said.
