New depot for Rapid Penang

GEORGE TOWN: RAPID Penang will soon build a new bus depot in Sungai Nibong, Bayan Lepas here.

The new depot will also house Rapid Penang’s new headquarters, said Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar recently.

Shahril said Rapid Penang was always committed to providing reliable and safe public transportation services.

“We want the public to enjoy a better standard of living and we will spare no efforts to achieve this.

“The new depot will also house our main office in Penang,” said Shahril during a buka puasa event at Rapid Penang’s depot and present headquarters in Lorong Kulit here.

He said the new depot would take about three years to be completed.

He said it would be fully equipped with facilities such as a gymnasium, an indoor sports court and other facilities.

“These facilities are for our staff so that they can have some fun after work,” he said.

Shahril, however, did not disclose the cost of the proposed depot and headquarters for Rapid Penang.

He also did not identify the new site but it is expected to be close to the express bus terminal near the Pesta Pulau Pinang Expo site.

Rapid Penang was launched in 2007 and has a fleet of 340 buses.

Covering almost every corner of the state, it is now the preferred public transport service.

Rapid Penang is also the only stage bus operator on the island and it controls over 75 per cent of the public mode of transportation on mainland Penang.

Over the years, Rapid Penang has introduced many new bus services to the public.

A popular service is the free bus ride within the heritage site in Georgetown with Hop On Free Central Area Transit (CAT).

Also popular is Rapid BEST (Bridge Express Shuttle Transit) that provides free shuttle service to the people from Penang Bridge to the Free Industrial Zone in Bayan Lepas.
