Khalid Samad to be charged with sedition

KUALA LUMPUR: Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad will be charged with sedition for remarks made against the Selangor Sultan in connection to the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).

When contacted, Tuesday, Khalid said he was at the Kuala Lumpur court complex. “I am expected to be charged soon,” he said.

It was reported in a news portal that Khalid was under investigation for sedition following his call to defang Mais in mid July this year.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was reported as saying that police would summon the Shah Alam MP for questioning as part of the probe under the Sedition Act 1948.

In June, the Shah Alam MP had said that following Mais’ refusal to return the bibles seized from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM), Selangor should consider amending the enactment allowing Mais to directly control the state’s religious authorities.

Khalid said this would ensure that Mais follows the policies of the Pakatan Rakyat state government and prevent the council from acting independently.
