‘PKR not bound by Pas Syura Council’s decision’

PETALING JAYA: DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Pas Syura Council was not privy to all the details on the Selangor menteri besar crisis, hence, its decision to support Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as the MB.

The PKR de facto leader said PKR was not bound by the decision made by the Syura Council.

In a statement signed by Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and his deputy, Datuk Dr Haron Din, the council said on Wednesday night that the decision to endorse Khalid’s leadership was based on syarak (Islamic canon law).

Anwar, however, said he respected the council’s decision.

“Based on the spirit of muafakat (consensus) within Pakatan, I respect the Pas Syura Council’s decision. We will look into the resolution and clarify if necessary.

“But when there is an issue involving our own member, the opinions of our allies will not bind us,” Anwar said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters here yesterday.

“The resolution was made by the Pas Syura Council and not by Pakatan Syura Council.”

He said the Pas Syura Council needed to be briefed on “certain facts”.

“I feel there are certain issues that need to be
clarified (to the council) and we will do it the proper way.

“Khalid is not just a PKR leader and a menteri besar. He is also a friend and very much a member of the family. I do not want this tussle to go on.”

To a question on whether the party’s central leadership meeting today will decide on Khalid’s fate, Anwar refused to comment.

PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin shared similar sentiments, also saying the Syura Council did not have full details.

“PKR respects the decision made by the council. However, the council had reached its decision with insufficient information.”

In Shah Alam, the council’s decision has drawn flak from its own members.

Shah Alam member of parliament Khalid Samad questioned the council’s decision, saying the council should not have come to such a conclusion without considering the allegations of misconduct against Khalid.

“Therefore, I urge council members to read the PKR’s dossier first instead of blindly pledging support for Khalid.”

The MP, who is also Pas central committee member, demanded that Khalid explain the allegations in the dossier, especially the “mysterious” out-of-court settlement of his remaining RM60 million in loans to Bank Islam.

“How and why did Bank Islam conveniently clear Khalid’s debts are questions that he needs to answer as this concerns his credibility as the state leader.”

In response, Pas Ulama vice-chief Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed said the Shah Alam MP had the right to air his personal views.

“However, I would like to remind him that the council’s decision to support Khalid was reached unanimously.”

Pas Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat said Khalid Samad’s statement would not influence Pas’ meeting next week, which will decide on the council’s resolution.

“Whatever it is, let us see what will take place during the meeting next Sunday.”
